PSARA provides a number of training programs for industrial emergency response team members. The courses are designed to train personnel in the safe and effective response to hazardous materials releases. These training programs satisfy the OSHA training requirements in 29 CFR 1910.120. Whether employees are going to respond in a defensive fashion or gear up in a Level "A" suit, PSARA has the right training program.

Awareness Level
The Awareness Level program teaches responders and other employees to recognize that hazardous materials are present.

Operations Level
The First Responder Operations Level course prepares responders to recognize the hazards they are facing and to take defensive action in the event of a release.

Hazardous Materials Technician
The 24-hour Hazardous Materials Technician course is designed for employees who are expected to stop the release of and/or cleanup a hazardous material.

Incident Command
The Incident Command course is for employees who are responsible for directing the response team and making overall command decisions. This course involves problem-solving sessions that challenge participants.

Refresher Classes
Refresher classes for each of these courses are offered to keep responders up-to-date on the latest technology and to review information not frequently used.

Course Format
These courses include intensive classroom training in chemical and physical hazards, personal protective equipment, and standard operating procedures for safe responses to hazardous materials emergencies. Classroom training in the use of personal protective equipment, air monitoring instruments, response procedures, control options and methods, and decontamination procedures is reinforced through a series of hands-on exercises and field demonstrations.

The Operations Level and Technician Level training programs culminate in the application of the course subject matter during a simulated chemical release. This exercise requires that the class function as a team to identify the material(s) released, assess the hazards, organize through the incident command structure, and respond appropriately to the situation. The scenario is then critiqued to reinforce and revise the response procedure.

Some of the topics addressed in this course include the following:

  • Overview of OSHA regulations, including 29 CFR 1910.120
  • Hazard recognition
  • Properties of hazardous materials
  • Toxicology/exposure guidelines
  • Personal protective equipment (lecture & exercise)
  • Respiratory protection (air-purifying and supplied-air systems) (lecture & multiple exercises)
  • Air monitoring instruments (lecture & exercise)
  • Decontamination procedures (lecture & exercise)
  • Hazard mitigation procedures (lecture & exercise)
  • Operations and coordination (lecture & scenario exercise)
